Legal Trio Test: It is used to determine paternity with greater accuracy by including the mother’s DNA in the analysis. This genetic test that involves three people:
➡️ the child,
➡️ the alleged father, and
➡️ the mother.
How a TRIO DNA Test Works:
-
DNA Sample Collection:
- All three individuals (child, alleged father, and mother) provide samples—typically via painless cheek swabs.
-
DNA Analysis:
- The child’s DNA is compared to both the mother’s and the alleged father’s.
- Since the child inherits half of their DNA from each parent, the lab first confirms which genes came from the mother.
- The remaining genes must then match the alleged father for him to be confirmed as the biological father.
-
Results:
- If the alleged father shares the expected genetic markers, the result is typically 99.99% or higher—meaning he is the father.
- If he does not match the required markers, the result will be 0%—he is not the father.
Why Include the Mother?
Including the mother:
- Helps eliminate any doubt about which DNA markers the child inherited from her.
-
Makes the analysis clearer and more definitive, especially in cases with:
- Close relatives involved
- Unusual genetic mutations
- Court-admissible/legal testing
When Is a TRIO DNA Test Used?
- Court orders (child support, custody)

- Personal confirmation
- Adoption and birth record verification
