Maternity Test

Legal Maternity Test: Can be used in court; requires chain-of-custody and ID verification. This genetic test is used to determine whether a specific woman is the biological mother of a particular child. Just like a paternity test, it analyzes DNA to establish a biological relationship.

How It Works:

  1. DNA Collection:
    • A sample is taken (usually a cheek swab) from the child and the alleged mother.
    • Sometimes the father’s DNA is also collected, but it’s not necessary for a conclusive result.
  2. DNA Comparison:
    • A child inherits half of their DNA from their biological mother.
    • The lab compares specific genetic markers between the child and the woman.
    • If the genetic material matches across these markers, maternity is confirmed.
  3. Results:
    • 99.99% or higher match = the woman is the mother.
    • 0% match = the woman is not the mother.

Why Someone Might Need a Maternity Test:

  • Adoption cases (to reunite or confirm biological relationships)
  • Hospital mix-ups (rare but possible after childbirth)
  • Immigration (to prove a biological relationship when applying for visas or residency)
  • Surrogacy or IVF confusion
  • Legal disputes (custody, inheritance, etc.)
